The following prayer is another example of how material from a prayer book, combined with the willingness to let the Holy Spirit work within us to express our needs. A prayer for forgiveness offers a connection with the traditional prayer of confession with the composer’s own sense of our need to be reminded to come to God in prayers of confession and reconciliation.
A PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS
The Cross
Merciful God, my maker and my judge.
I have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what I have failed to do.
INVITATORY
I have not loved you with my whole heart
I have not loved my neighbours as myself
I repent and am sorry for all my sins
FIRST CRUCIFORM
God in your power, forgive me
SECOND CRUCIFORM
Jesus in your compassion, forgive me
THIRD CRUCIFORM
Mary in your grace, forgive me (alternate: Holy Spirit in your wisdom, forgive me)
FOURTH CRUCIFORM
Holy Spirit in your wisdom, forgive me (alternate: Holy Trinity in your love, forgive me)
WEEK DAY
Confession of your sins.
OUTGOING INVITATORY
God, forgive me, strengthen me to love and obey you in the newness of life, through Jesus Christ Our Lord.
